Interview by JOSH ANXT
Rwake is a 6 piece band of total insanity hailing from Little Rock, AR. If you've never heard of them, here is your chance. Do whatever it takes to get one of their recordings. The sounds that will proceed to fly out of your speakers will do nothing short of shock you. I conducted this interview with them via email. Drummer Jeff answered all of the questions but the last one, which bass player Reid answered. And don't worry if you think I offended Reid with that question. I've been friends with that dude for years and we like to give each other shit. Besides, its not my fault he's such a bloody rag, isn't that right Reid? Anyway, here is the interview.
Who is in the band and what do they do?
CT:vocals/madman the B:vocals/Moog/samples Kris G.:Les Paul Chuck:SG Reid:bass noise Jeff:drums..gong
Your name used to be spelled Wake and now there is a silent R added to the front. Why the change in spelling?
For the first year we were a band, we called ourselves Wake and mainly played for ourselves and never really ventured outside the mid-south area, and then when we started getting out more we found that there was a million bands with the same name. Instead of changing it we incorperated the R after CT was blitzed on DM and R's just started appering on every word he said. He said "rwake". It was just cool to capture how the English language liquifies of heavy psychedelics.
I’ve tried to explain to people what Rwake sounds like to no avail. How do you describe the sound yourselves?
Loud, sonic madness soaked in whiskey and smothered with weed, good drugs gone bad.... .
What are some bands you have played with that our readers may be familiar with?
Uh........Bongzilla, Alabama Thunderpussy, Suplecs, Spirit Caravan, Eyehategod, Soilent Green, the weird Marshall Applewhite lookin guy from Hawkwind, which was Lemmy from Motorhead's first band.......
What subjects do the lyrics of Rwake focus on?
Taking drugs, people close to you dying, dreams. Its hard to speak for CT, but he's in bed right now.
You just inked a deal with European label Retribute Records. How did the label and band find each other?
We found each other through our southern brothers, Beaten Back to Pure. They are a cool european label with a kick-ass catalog.
What happened with Berserker Records?
He put us on the South of Hell comp.
Up here, far away from the bible belt, Christianity still tries to reign supreme. How much slack do you guys get for your anti-Christian stance such as the song “ The War Against the Christians” and your email address?
Actually the whole thing started with an old b/w Russian silent movie about what it was like during the time before christianity when dumb-ass, white-bred christians were invading innocent, content countries and they slaughtered all who thought for themselves. But with Arkansas being such a close-minded, follower type society, the stance kind of built itself.
What kind of equipment are you using? (i.e. cabinets, guitars, drums, mics)
Old and half broke, but still loud as all hell.
What’s the first thing that enters your mind when I say Marijuana?
Prison.
Which way do you prefer to smoke? (i.e. bong, joint) Moutain Dew can Some of your other favorite drugs?
Coke.speed,dm,any pain pills,any muscle relaxer,anti-psychotics,inhalants,horse,methadone,morphine,oxycontin.....etc,mixed w/alcohol and smoke if done right!..Rohibonol??
Do the drugs enhance your music?
Only when they're good.
How do you like the Milwaukee metal fest? Rwake has been there twice correct?
Yeah the first year was real good, then the line-up the second year was pretty skimp. We still always have a blast there no matter what.
Will you do it a third year?
We'll see. It just depends.
Favorite place to play?
We like playing anywhere. NOLA is always the best for us. It seems that more people actually get out to the shows there.
Where did you play with Soilent Green? Wasn’t it in someone’s house?
We've played with them many times here in Arkansas. One time they got rained out here in Little Rock and ended up having one of their favorite shows in the house we were practicing at during that time, which is owned by our bud who is in Sickshine/Temeyoski here in LR. The place has become infamous from that one.
Your album “absence do to projection” was recorded by Steve Austin of Today is the Day. He seems like he would be an awesome guy to work with. What can you tell me about that experience?
It was awesome. He is a great friend and a legendary musician to us. It was an honor to work with him and we are planning to record with him again soon
Your also on a well known compilation called “South of Hell”. Did anything good come out of that for Rwake?
Shit yeah, man. Anytime you are sharing disc space with such killer bands as Icepick Revival, Leechmilk, Hawg Jaw, Dove, Mugwart, and Beaten Back to Pure, everything that comes out of it is nothing but good.
What are some cds or records you would call your favorites or what your currently listening to?
We listen to goddamn everything, seperatly and as a band. Currently in the van is shit like Molly Hatchet, Slayer, Atomic Rooster, Ozzy, The Obsessed, Govt. Mule, Voivod, Willie, Hank Jr. Suffocation, Skynyrd, Candlemass, Charlie Daniels, Isis, ... so much shit.
Do you have anything you want to tell our readers? Tell them whatever you want. Maybe something you always wanted to say in an interview and never did?
Get off the fuckin net and go to some fuckin shows and see some bands you never fuckin seen before.
Last question. Why is your bass player such a bleeding fucking vagina?
Down here we call it pussy, you fuckin pussy. FUCK YOU..........and I'll see you in Pittsburgh bitch. clear=all>
