Midgard
Within the Darkness
Reviewed by Rob "stick" Wagner
There must be something in the water in Denver. This city just keeps pumping out high quality metal. Midgard’s new release cements this fact. These sad sacks play some of the most depressing music this side of old Paradise Lost or old Anethema. Their music is a swirl of beautiful melodies, haunting riffs, alternating growled and sung vocals, and precision drumming. The arrangements are perfect, and the production is perfect. Every instrument is accounted for, and the vocals are layered just right for the doom-death they play.
Once again, the layout is beautiful. These Denver cats seem to understand that presentation is just as important as performance. This is the best slim line case package I’ve ever seen. The colors are bold and vibrant, which is really weird, as the color concept is dark. Even the cheesy font seems to work in the context of their image. What’s more, I can actually read it, so there are some bonus points in that.
All I can tell you is that this is essential listening for any fan of morose music. The mood will ooze right out of your stereo and into your soul.
