Interview with JC of Before Silence
Interview by DJ
When & how did BEFORE SILENCE form?
In 2003, the band was founded by Steve (keyboards), Cedric (bass) and JC
(guitars). After trying a couple of singers, the band came to the
conclusion
that JC should give it a try as vocalist. Philippe Laurent joined us in
June
2004. In May 2005 we welcomed Nico at the drums.
Who all consists of the band Before Silence?
- Cédric Vielvoye : bass
- JC Marchal : vocals & rhythm guitars
- Nicolas Guilitte : drums
- Philippe Laurent : lead & rhythm guitars
- Steve Dupont : keyboards
What is new with Before Silence? Any recording plans? Release dates?
Upcoming Shows?
We just completed the recording of what will be our debut CD. We recorded
seven tracks that make 40 minutes of music. Some track are quite long. We
expect the CD to be available by the 01st of January 2006.
Who came up with the name "Before Silence" and what is the meaning
behind it?
We were looking for a name that was representing the style and was also
quite open to interpretation. We came up with “Before Silence” and we
found
it sounded pretty well. In the early days we also came with the idea of
the
two-headed-wolf to have some kind of symbol to link with the band and that
could be easily recognized.
What recordings do you currently have available?
2004 – The Screaming Wolf – 3 tracks home-made demo (in fact 6 tracks were
recorded)
2005 – The Ultimate Nothing – 7 tracks studio recording
How is the Metal scene in Belgium? Are there many bands and places to
play? Who are some other good metal bands from Belgium?
Many many many bands covering all styles in the metal. It is currently
becoming more and more extreme and agressive. Few years ago we had a
‘Nu-metal’ wave that is now being replaced by HardCore, Death, Black, …
The
level is quite high in terms of quality and musician skills. With our
“technical/melodic/…” we are some kind of special birds.
There are quite some places to play in Belgium considering the fact that
Belgium is relatively small (300 km by 150km). We have quite some clubs,
few
mid-range venues and large venues.
Do you currently have any merch available? If so where can people get
it?
On our website there is a page purposed for it. You can get our first
tee-shirt that features a basic logo. You can also get copies of our
releases.
What genre of metal would you consider Before Silence?
It’s heavy, technical, melodic with a touch of prog. Each member is of
course bringing his influences into the music but we don’t want it to be
just a copy of anything we listen to. The melodies are quite elaborated
and
the vocals are different than what you would expect from a band like us.
Even if zillions of songs have been already writen, we hope that this mix
wil be perceived as something fresh and different.
Other than your official website (http://www.beforesilence.com), is
there anything else about Before Silence on the internet you'd like our
readers to know about?
No. The amount of references to us is increasing (reviews, few interviews,
gigs, …) but all is consolidated on our website.
How many shows has Before Silence played so far? Is there a show that
sticks out as your favorite or most memorable?
Around 20. The 2 dates at the Frontline in Ghent. Great venue, show and
crowd reaction. It requires less and less efforts to get new dates, so it
looks like it starts to pay. We are also starting to get some
opportunities
to perform in larger venues and to support international acts. So we do
evolve in the right direction.
What are some of the previous bands Before Silence members have been
in?
We don’t think they are worth being mentionned as Before Silence is the
most
advanced project to date for all the members.
Thoughts on the war in Iraq?
Interesting question as on our CD there is a track titled “Bless” that
covers this subject. What can we say more than what many people must have
been already writing and telling about the subject. This is just a
repetition of what we know about humanity since the first human being hit
the earth. Our only thought is that it is a real shame that a few people
manage to get many being killed for their own personal interest.
What can us Metalheads expect from Before Silence in the future?
Who knows what may happen. But we have to be realistic as we do exist for
less than 3 years There is still a long way to go in our own little
country.
But thanks to the net, everyone interested in our music has the
opportunity
to follow up how we will evolve. We’ll make our cd available at an
attractive price so that anyone can get a chance to get a copy.
Anything you'd like to add or close with?
Thanks for giving us the opportunity to complete this interview. Stay
metal and we just hope you’ll like our little musical world.
