In the land of rebel flags and pentagrams there was once a compilation that went by the name of "South of Hell". Good disc full of great metal bands all from the southern part of the country. There was one band specifically though called Beaten Back to Pure. To be fully honest, I was very UN-impressed with the band. Just seemed generic. Then DJ hands me their new disc for review and I skeptically put it in the player and hit the button expecting the worst. BOOM!!! I could not have been any more wrong. Beaten Back..... has put some study hours in and have come up with a new album full of great material. They've even expanded their sound to now include some clean vocals and acoustic guitars, the last of which has only been seen in small doses in the southern metal scene. And for those of you familiar with the band already, don't worry, Ben "Boss" Hogg still has the rough vocals. He just now adds another layer with some clean ones here and there. This disc has 8 tracks, all of which are excellent. Everybody should also check out other titles from the label Beaten Back... is on, Retribute records outta England, who has been racking up an impressive roster of southern stoner/doom. So if you were to ask if I recommend this disc I might have to give you the answer in the form of a resounding...... HELL YEA!!!
